Levon waded through the toys scattered all over the floor on his way to the front door. It was nearly five in the morning and he'd woken up ten minutes before the alarm. Normally he'd have taken the time to wake his husband, but Joe had been up late last night with Tony, who'd been having one of his velcro nights. A glass of water, a book, a toy, another book, a hug, another glass of water... The boy had been missing his momma and daddy but hadn't wanted to say so. Joe had indulged him, and neither of them had got to sleep before midnight. So this morning Levon flicked off the alarm and snuck out of bed to let Joe sleep in while he tended to the outside chores.

His toe hit something plastic and he bit back a curse; glancing down all he could see were big painted flowers. Something of Angie's, then, but gods knew what it was. He hadn't seen it before but he knew two things -- it would be broken in two months, and it was pink. He'd been a dad long enough to know all he needed to about human-made toys.

He stepped around it and headed on -- there'd been a time when he'd said the living room had to be cleaned up before bed. Levon opened the door and stepped outside, taking a moment to breathe in the fresh night air. He shut the door silently behind him and changed forms, tip-toeing off the porch in his hooves.

Centaur kids were a damn sight easier, doing as they were told. No arguing, haggling, and no screaming and slamming of doors. And there were still all the best parts -- the laughter and snuggling and being damn proud of every little new thing they did.

Levon wasn't sure why everyone didn't trade their kids in for colts and fillies.

As he slipped into the barn, he heard Fooler snuffling in her sleep. Too early for her, too, so he backed up and shut the door again. Levon turned around towards the expanse of their land. A run to the end and back would be perfect. THere was just enough light to see the ground, and the air was just cool enough he wouldn't get overheated.

Glancing towards the house, he thought about the fact he hadn't gone for a run without Joe in over two years. Then he thought about Joe, lying in bed. It would be a shame to wake him.

Levon smiled and went back into the house, changing forms again as he reached the front door. Snuck back to his bedroom, snuck over to bed, then crawled in beside Joe and closed his eyes.
