Snippet #2
Jul. 10th, 2003 12:51 pmAJ Simon
When he was little, AJ used to climb out of bed at night and go out into the hallway. He'd sit near his brother's bedroom door -- or, on those occasions when the door was open, he'd sneak inside. Sometimes Rick would be awake and he'd invite AJ into bed with him, thinking he'd had a bad dream.
Now, AJ still sneaks down the stairs of his house and sits in the living room. There's a chair facing the glass door, through which he can see the shadow of his brother's boat. He knows that if he snuck onboard Rick would probably not say anything but ask him if he had a bad dream.
But AJ has never crept out of bed to escape his nightmares. He goes because somewhere, along the line, he has learned that he cannot sleep if his brother is too far away.
