Disconcert

There are numerous reasons why he can not have what he wants. As many reasons as there are stars in the sky, beginning with the difference in their ages and ending with the fact he never, ever, gets what he wants. Add to that the mix of families, of his past, and of his reputation that is built on what he has become -- irritable, disconsolate, and thoroughly unappealing -- and there is no reason at all to even do more than consider it a passing fancy, and let it go.

If he seems bitter, and takes it out on his students, it is no great mystery. As long as none of them learn why he is... well, content is not the proper word. He is willing to live with his endless lifetime of never-have. He accepts things the way they are.

Even if he does not understand why, despite it all, he still wakes up each summer morning to the sight of unkempt red hair on the pillow beside his own.
