Aliens

"Hippocampus bleekeri."

Jack looked up from where he'd been watching over Tosh's shoulder as she worked. He stared at Ianto for a moment, running the words through his brain again. Finally, he shook his head. "Alien?"

There was the slightest smirk on Ianto's face -- it made Jack want to kiss him. If they hadn't been in the middle of... well, no, screw it. Jack took the requisite two steps and indulged himself.

When he let go, Ianto looked distracted, then briefly amused before he composed himself right back into the serious, straight-laced expression that Jack loved teasing smirks out of.

"Hippocampus bleekeri," Ianto repeated. "That's what we're looking for; rather, what we should be looking for."

Jack opened his mouth to ask again, when Tosh interrupted with, "A potbelly seahorse?"

Ianto nodded, and Jack looked from him to Tosh, then at the computer screen where Tosh had apparently googled 'Hippocampus bleekeri.'

"Cardiff is being invaded by seahorses?" It didn't really explain the five-foot long prints they'd found two days ago, nor explain the loud moaning that filled the nights. "I'm pretty sure seahorses don't have feet. Or vocal cords. Please tell me they aren't mutated seahorses."

"No," Ianto agreed. "But Fripantisa males are highly allergic to them, which is possibly why they landed here instead of Melbourne -- the last time they came to Earth, reports from Torchwood Sydney say they landed in Melbourne, went scuba diving, and left for a hundred years." Ianto shrugged. "Perhaps if we just spread rumours of an infestation of potbelly seahorses...?"

"Why would aliens come to Earth to go scuba diving?" Tosh asked.

"The fees for scuba diving on Fripant are exorbitant," Jack explained. "Not to mention the fees just for doing the paperwork needed to apply for a license. Tosh, do a search on local aquariums. Let's see if we can scare these kids into going back home quietly."

"There's one more thing, sir," Ianto said, lifting one hand as if to grab Jack's arm.

"What?"

Ianto grabbed his arm, tugged him closed, and kissed him back. Jack let himself forget all about invading aliens, wild teenagers, and anything at all to do with oceans for a very long moment. Then Ianto stepped back and gave him that very small, very endearing and sometimes extremely frustrating smirk. "Sorry, sir. But Owen had 'fourteen' for today's bet, and Gwen asked me to make sure he didn't win again."
