Snippet #18
Aug. 8th, 2003 04:34 pmDaniel Jackson
Daniel knows he's crazy.
He knows that what he believes is crazy. He also knows what he has seen, and what he has not seen. He knows what makes sense, and what does not.
He knows that the only explanation is the one that fits the facts, no matter how bizarre. The world is not logical, and there are more things Horatio and even Occam's Razor is accepted by the scientific community as a reason for asserting one theory's truth over others. it is simpler to assert common cause and external influence, than wrap the facts around more mundane, more acceptable, explanations.
Everyone he talks to thinks his idea is insane. He gets flyers in the mail for books and catalogs for crystals and mirrors and conversations with the dead. Vacations to the last known spot of Atlantis. Past life readings from the drops of coffee in his mug.
People snicker at him when they think he can't hear -- or don't care that he can. One of his professors set up a lunch meeting with Daniel, herself, and a friend -- professional collegue. Psychology.
But nothing makes sense. None of the accepted theories admit what's really there. Daniel knows this, he believes it to the depth of his bones. He's spent more time than any of them deconstructing his theory and looking for holes and inconsistencies and better explanations.
There is nothing. Aliens did this. He knows this. He believes. It's crazy to believe it, but he does.
And that's what frightens him the most. What if he really is insane?
