FIC: Torchwood 1/1
Oct. 23rd, 2006 06:54 amTitle: Torchwood
Author: James
Pairing: implied Jack/Doctor/Rose
Rating: G
Spoilers: for the existence of Torchwood
Word Count: ~300
Summary: The stars aren't everything.
Notes: a short ficlet to celebrate the existence of Torchwood and return of Captain Jack.
Jack went out that first night, stared up at the stars. A thousand reasons to look, a billion places attached to each twinkling spot. Once, the entire universe -- past present future -- had been his.
He didn't miss it the way he'd expected to. He knew, standing there on the ground, that once he could have picked a star and gone -- seen and been and touched and lived. Now he could spend the hours of the night simply trying to name the places he knew. Kalisa, Megrii. The Lights of Catrin. Even as he thought their names his eyes sought out new places, old memories.
Somewhere out there the Doctor and Rose were... somewhen, somehow. Doing whatever it was needed doing, whether it was saving the universe again, saving one small planet, or saving the price of a tip by charming the waitress.
Perhaps that last had just been him.
Jack had stared up at the sky exactly once, thinking about the universe and all the places he couldn't go.
Then he'd gone inside and concentrated on just listening. Someday he would hear it, and that familiar whirr would fill in the spots the universe had left.
