Grape
by James
When Sam was born, Dean had stayed home with a babysitter. When John had brought Mary and Sam home, they had found Dean sitting in the living room eating peanut butter and jelly on crackers. He'd jumped up and run to them and Mary had knelt down to let him see Sam. They'd met at the hospital, but at a couple days older, Sammy had looked more like a real baby and less like a squished red worm -- Dean's words.
Dean had been happy to see his brother, and had given him a kiss on the forehead. He'd left a smear of grape jelly behind, and Mary had fought hard not to laugh out loud. Cindy, the babysitter, had snapped pictures and John remembered how looking at them had always made Mary giggle.
They'd lost the photos in the fire, but Dean still loved peanut butter and grape jelly. He still left smears on his brother's forehead when he kissed Sammy good night, but now, at the wise old age of seven, he would carefully wipe the smear off with his sleeve.
John watches, and thinks how Mary would be laughing.
