Title: Casual Friday
Author: James
Rating: G
Series: Many Faces of Radek Zelenka
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit made
Summary: A snippet of life in one of the many universes of Radek Zelenka.
Notes: Casual Friday is a US thing where some businesses allow employees to come to work on Friday in casual clothing.

Radek woke up slowly, enjoying the long, comfortable ease with which the day's work did not immediately press upon him. It had been several weeks since they had fooled the Wraith into believing the city was destroyed and as a result -- one of many -- none of them had to scurry out of bed and hurry to their duties.

Not unless they overslept and had a meeting scheduled, at any rate.

But Radek was able to take his time, lying there until he simply could no longer stay in bed. This morning, like most lately, Radek laid in bed for nearly fifteen minutes before scooting to the edge of the bed and jumping out.

He waddled towards the bathroom unhurriedly, jumping the slight rise into the shower stall. He honked once, and a stream of water switched on.

It didn't take long to get ready; half an hour later Radek waddled out of his room and down the hallway towards the cafeteria. He nodded at Charlene, the biologist who had quarters just down from his. She was just heading to bed -- she worked the night shift, her speciality being nocturnal animals. They rarely spoke, but saw each other often, crossing paths each morning.

Radek thought about his breakfast, and the projects he had lined up for the day. He wanted to spend the day -- the whole weekend, hopefully -- working on the puddle jumper propulsion systems. That depended on one Rodney McKay being distracted from the theories he'd been wanting to test yesterday. Why he insisted that Radek be the one to drop whatever he was working on and argue with him... well, Radek knew perfectly well it was because he never hesitated to tell Rodney he was being a moron about something.

But today he didn't want to argue. He wanted to bury himself in the puddle jumper and not come out until Monday's staff meeting.

"Morning, Dr. Zelenka," Teyla nodded at him, giving him a friendly smile.

Radek honked back and waved one flipper. He waddled past her, not minding that she stopped and watched as he went by.

The transporter was at the end of the hallway; Radek went inside and jumped up the series of short steps beside the directory panel. He jabbed at the cafeteria's icon with his beak, then jumped down to the floor and waddled out as the door slid open.

The cafeteria was busy, most personnel getting ready for their shifts. Radek ignored the line for the coffee, and headed over to the shorter line for breakfast.

Private Mullins was sitting beside the pool with a barrel; he dipped into it with a pair of tongs, pulling out small bunches of krill and tossing them into the pool. Radek waited his turn, then asked politely for a bit extra -- he'd missed lunch the day before due to Rodney's silly argument, and dinner had been rather appalling.

Mullins just nodded, and Radek dove in as he tossed in two tongfuls of krill. He ate quickly, then leapt out of the shallow pool on the opposite side. Shaking himself, he thought about whether he wanted to get back in line for just a bit more, or bother someone for a swallow of their coffee.

He decided against it as he heard Rodney's voice. Sneaking behind a group of Marines, all in a various mix of humanoid and penguinod forms, Radek headed quickly for the door.

A few minutes later he was free, waddling down the hallway and headed for the jumper bay.
